If you’re older than 21, you’re considered an adult. If you’re over the age of 18, you can vote. But if you’re 14, 15, 16—how do you make your voice heard?

Right this moment, around the world, teens are making sure their voices are heard. It’s impossible to ignore. They make the newsweekly, and you can expect to hear even more about them as time goes on. It’s a worldwide youth-centered movement that’s here to stay, at least for now. It’s a global climate strike!

In more than 450 countries, students choose a Friday to skip school for a good cause—their survival. As adults, we’ve kicked the can so far down the road that we now have a generation that faces permanent climate disaster in their lifetime. It’s a tough pill to swallow. As Howard Beale exclaims in the film Network (1976), “I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore!” And why should these kids? They’ll be stuck on this planet for much longer than today’s adults. 15-year-old Greta Thunberg has become a key player in these school climate strikes that may soon appear in your community. Greta sums everything up in her address to the UN Climate Conference and in the following interview.

Climate Change and Entrepreneurs

Since we are avid supporters of entrepreneurship, we want to analyze this school climate movement from the viewpoint of its impact on the business arena. We think that real change, even improving climate change, comes from all the ways in which we spend our money as consumers. All of the products and services we choose to purchase—that’s where real change comes from.

Survivalist Purchasing Trends

It’s simple—the vendors that we pay, use our money to lobby and protect their investments. If they don’t get our money, and if we give to healthy alternatives instead, then those vendors have that influence. It’s all about how you choose where to spend your money. These teenagers know that. They’re not just going on strike for the sake of it. They’re communicating on a higher level, something that’s never been seen before! They’re talking about this very issue and what it means concerning their current and future purchase habits. These new “survivalist” trends are already starting to dominate the market, according to Nielsen.

Considering the fact that these teenagers will be voting in three years, and will officially be considered adults in six years, shouldn’t today’s entrepreneur pay attention to what types of products and services these teens will buy now and in the near future?

A Green Opportunity

To do our part, we’ve been finding, researching, and helping out these exact types of “green” companies. We know they will very soon be in demand, and most importantly, on the right side of history. Shouldn’t they sell products to these students on a climate strike? They are a growing demographic that is quickly educating themselves about the ramifications of each purchase they make. What an excellent opportunity for every entrepreneur to be ahead of the curve in order to benefit from this huge trend. Besides, isn’t that what business is all about?

When Greta says her generation is taking action—When she says she’s giving up on our generation to make a positive change in time, she isn’t just talking about going on strike. She’s talking about a whole new generation of consumers that are changing their buying habits. Let’s give these teens what they need! It might just end up helping us redeem our fellow generation for falling asleep at the wheel. It’s happening—and it’s happening right now.
