however, data also provides a portal for companies to better serve their customers, reward loyalty, and provide that personalized service many crave.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">One person who is using data to help transform a traditional business is Chris\u00a0Silcock, Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer at <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hilton.com\/en\/corporate\/\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\"><strong>Hilton Worldwide<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">&#8220;The most challenging journey\u00a0we&#8217;ve\u00a0been on,\u00a0and we are on,\u00a0is the data and analytics journey,&#8221;\u00a0Chris said\u00a0during a recent <\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/csuiteold.c-suitenetwork.com\/\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">C-Suite Network<\/span><\/a><\/strong><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\"> Digital Discussion.\u00a0&#8220;There&#8217;s\u00a0so much gold in\u00a0them\u00a0hills.\u00a0There&#8217;s\u00a0so much promise\u00a0bringing it to life.\u00a0We&#8217;ve\u00a0started to achieve and make good strides forward, but\u00a0there&#8217;s\u00a0a long way (to go),\u00a0and\u00a0it&#8217;s\u00a0(a)\u00a0really difficult ride.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">Chris helped create the hotel chain\u2019s\u00a0first data and analytics team.\u00a0Under his leadership, Hilton has transitioned from what he calls a\u00a0&#8220;transactional\u00a0environment to a real-time, event-based architecture.&#8221;\u00a0This shift\u00a0enables\u00a0Hilton to better adapt to changes\u00a0and predict what\u00a0a customer\u00a0needs\u00a0or wants next.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">&#8220;You can start to personalize the experience based on common attributes of the customer &#8212; where\u00a0they&#8217;re\u00a0coming in from, what\u00a0they&#8217;ve\u00a0shopped in the past,&#8221; Chris stated. \u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">While all this work sounds like it happens in an instant, it actually takes place in stages.\u00a0Chris says it helps Hilton get to know its customers better\u00a0and ultimately provide better service.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">&#8220;We\u00a0can&#8217;t\u00a0do this yet, but the architecture\u00a0we&#8217;re\u00a0setting up will enable us to,\u00a0(when)\u00a0somebody arrives in the hotel, the customer service agent\u00a0to be able to talk to them\u00a0with context,&#8221;\u00a0Chris said.\u00a0&#8220;They know that your flight\u2019s being delayed. So,\u00a0you&#8217;re\u00a0likely in a bad mood. So,\u00a0I&#8217;m\u00a0going to do X to make the experience\u00a0(better)\u00a0and relieve stress for you.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">The\u00a0analytics\u00a0team&#8217;s\u00a0work\u00a0paid off when the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Because Hilton\u00a0was\u00a0collecting\u00a0so much data, Chris\u2019s team was able to see which segments of the business were\u00a0getting ready to rebound and which may take a while to return.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vFujvmTZuIw\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\"><br \/>\n&#8220;While\u00a0business\u00a0travel (and) group business dropped incredibly\u00a0fast and has remained quite low, we started to see signals from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/vFujvmTZuIw\">leisure travelers<\/a><\/strong>, even during the height of the pandemic they were desperate to get out, although they were traveling with different patterns,&#8221;\u00a0Chris said.\u00a0&#8220;Whereas they used to go to big resorts or big cities, we saw a migration within\u00a0200-300 miles\u00a0from\u00a0their home.\u00a0They just wanted\u00a0at the\u00a0very last minute the ability to drive, stay overnight have a different environment,\u00a0a slightly different experience to have a break from what\u00a0had\u00a0become the monotony of home.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">Seeing these patterns, Hilton began offering\u00a0travelers\u00a0custom\u00a0products\u00a0that offered flexibility if their plans changed and other perks\u00a0like early check-in or later check-out.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">Like all businesses during the pandemic, the hospitality industry suffered a major economic impact. Only three short years ago, the industry generated more than $1.6 trillion in economic output. After the pandemic, people stopped traveling, and business grinded to a halt.\u00a0Chris said\u00a0the data is\u00a0allowing his team to focus on\u00a0when business will start picking up again.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">&#8220;During the pandemic,\u00a0our data team put together this model that both predicted and also monitored\u00a0190 markets around the world\u00a0and how they moved through five different stages &#8212; from crisis to early recovery to stabilization,&#8221;\u00a0Chris said.\u00a0&#8220;That was a huge thing for us\u00a0because that enabled us to suddenly personalize our action on a global basis.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">While this is\u00a0allowing Hilton to forecast more in-depth, one trend is showing that\u00a0the\u00a0meeting business is slowly coming back. However, Hilton\u00a0isn&#8217;t\u00a0expecting anything even close to business as usual until\u00a0the\u00a0third\u00a0quarter of 2021.\u00a0Even so, Chris admits the data\u00a0his team is collecting now\u00a0will be null and void once economies\u00a0stabilize worldwide unless we see another\u00a0significant\u00a0downturn.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;margin-bottom: .0001pt;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">Collecting all these\u00a0personalized\u00a0data-points on specific customers\u00a0across the world\u00a0many people leery and suspicious.
