You can\u2019t listen to a podcast or go anywhere on the internet without\u00a0seeing their ads and products featured.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">David is quite the entrepreneur, with two successful exits prior to launching his current company.\u00a0\u00a0In fact, he was working another job when\u00a0he stumbled upon\u00a0the idea for\u00a0Bombas\u00a0on social media.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cI was scrolling Facebook one day while I was at work and I came across this post on my feed that said socks are the most requested clothing items at homeless shelters,\u201d David said. \u201cI thought \u2018huh, I didn\u2019t know that.\u2019 I would have thought it was coats or jeans or sneakers.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kUZw6sPr508\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cHere\u2019s an item of clothing I never spend more than a few seconds a day thinking about and it\u2019s perceived as a luxury item for over 600,000 people living right here in the U.S. I just couldn\u2019t shake it.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">He is not far off with the numbers. According to the 2020 Annual Homeless Assessment <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hud.gov\/press\/press_releases_media_advisories\/hud_no_21_041\">report<\/a> <\/strong>to Congress, there are 580,466 people that have experienced homelessness in the U.S. on a single night in 2020. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">This is when David decided\u00a0Bombas\u00a0would be a part of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bombas.com\/pages\/giving-back\">one-for-one movement<\/a> <\/strong>&#8212; a business model where pro-profit companies have built in\u00a0philanthropy. For\u00a0Bombas, it was to give away a pair of socks for every pair sold.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">To date,\u00a0Bombas\u00a0has donated over 50 million pairs of socks through more than 3,500 giving partners scattered across all 50 states.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">All this\u00a0business and community success comes from a product most of us don\u2019t normally think twice about. Even David admits, he didn\u2019t think much about the undergarments\u00a0industry until\u00a0starting\u00a0Bombas, but one thing he did know was\u00a0the existing\u00a0brands weren\u2019t exciting.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cWe see ourselves as being the Starbucks of the basics, inner wear category,\u201d David says. \u201cAs Starbucks is to Maxwell House, we are to Hanes. Yes, it costs two to three times more per product, but the product and experience are so much better than what you\u2019d expect from one of those other brands.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">This even led to a very successful and clever marketing campaign for the \u201c<\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ypwTxDXN7Rc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #0563c1\"><strong>greatest sock never sold<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/a><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201d touting the\u00a0Bombas\u00a0donation\u00a0sock.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cWhy would you go out with a marketing campaign, spend money\u00a0talking about a sock you don\u2019t sell?\u201d David asked.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">While\u00a0that question seems obvious to anyone in business, David says\u00a0the groundwork\u00a0leading up to the campaign started with a\u00a0promise that, let\u2019s just say was about to\u00a0be written in permanent ink.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cBefore we even launched\u00a0the company, I remember sitting across the table from Randy (Goldberg), who\u2019s one of our co-founders\u00a0and I said \u2018you know what? If we ever donate a million pairs of socks,\u00a0I will tattoo the\u00a0Bombas\u00a0logo\u00a0on me,\u201d\u00a0David said.\u00a0\u201cI kind of said it as a lark. A million pairs? We hadn\u2019t sold one! I thought people would forget about it. We did it in two years.\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">A good business never misses an opportunity\u00a0for great promotion.\u00a0In 2016 to\u00a0capitalize on\u00a0million pair\u00a0goal,\u00a0Bombas\u00a0created a\u00a0<\/span><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/bombas.com\/pages\/million\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif;color: #0563c1\">viral video<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/strong><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0campaign\u00a0centered around David\u2019s tattoo \u2013 which kicked off a personal trend for David.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cI didn\u2019t have any tattoos and here I am seven years later, I got the bug and I\u2019ve got 10 or 11. It is a slippery slope once you get one,\u201d\u00a0he said.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">Trips to the tattoo parlor aside, that campaign\u00a0lead\u00a0the company\u00a0decided to celebrate other million sock milestones.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cWe did five million pairs. When we got to ten million,\u00a0we decided that we can\u2019t keep telling the same story,\u201d David said. \u201cWe decided \u2018Okay, what if we talk about our donation sock\u2019?\u201d<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">When\u00a0Bombas\u00a0started,\u00a0it\u00a0was donating the same socks you\u00a0or I\u00a0would buy.\u00a0However, they kept hearing\u00a0from\u00a0the organizations they worked with\u00a0that\u00a0homeless people had different\u00a0sock\u00a0needs.\u00a0The team at\u00a0Bombas\u00a0went to the drawing board and\u00a0re-engineered\u00a0their signature\u00a0socks. They came up with\u00a0a sock\u00a0in darker colors to cover up wear,\u00a0designed them with\u00a0thicker seams so they last longer and\u00a0added\u00a0a special anti-microbial coating.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">Bombas\u00a0was\u00a0following a tried-and-true rule of business: responding to customer\u00a0needs &#8212; even if\u00a0we\u2019re not talking about\u00a0customers in the\u00a0traditional sense.<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">David says\u00a0Bombas\u00a0isn\u2019t stopping at just socks.\u00a0They expanded its product lines to offering underwear and t-shirts, keeping with the one-for-one philosophy. Soon,\u00a0Bombas\u00a0is planning to commission an independent study to see how many homeless shelters there are in the United States and find out which items are in demand.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"eop\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph\" style=\"margin: 0in;vertical-align: baseline\"><span class=\"normaltextrun\"><span style=\"font-family: 'Calibri',sans-serif\">\u201cWe don\u2019t really have the sense (of what\u2019s needed) at what volume. Is it 50 million? 100 million? 500 million?\u201d David said. \u201cWe want something where we can measure our impact and say we\u2019re delivering 50% or 10%\u00a0(of what\u2019s needed).
