He summed up his leadership philosophy to me when he said, \u201cI have to have all the answers because that\u2019s what people look for in a leader. I am not supposed to ask<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">;<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0I am supposed to\u00a0<\/span><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">know.<\/span><\/i><i><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span data-contrast=\"none\">Acting otherwise would only weaken my ability to lead.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u201d\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">He<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0told\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">how\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">do their jobs<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. He\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">prioritized their tasks,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">offer<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ed\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">incentives,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">and promoted employees\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">who did want he told them to do<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. He also disciplined\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">people when they didn\u2019t hit the targets he had set out. Sometimes he fired people and believed that doing so would \u201csend a message\u201d to other people to deliver what he demanded.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Was Executive A successful? According to some yardsticks, he was. He had held a top leadership position in his company for\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">more than\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">two decades<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. He\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">was\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">often<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">ble to hit sales quotas and deliver\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">measurable\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">results. But at the same time, he had learned to live with certain chronic problems in his unit<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Work for most people was repetitive.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Turnover was high.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">The people he supervised worked in an\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">overly politicized climate where\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">they<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0competed instead of cooperated<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">. People\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">withheld their best ideas<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0\u2013 who was listening? \u2013 and hoped\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">to use them later in their next jobs. Things were getting done, but overall performance was far from optimized.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Executive B\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Executive B\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">had also worked for more than 20 years in top executive positions. Yet\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">she summed up her own leadership in terms far different from those used by Executive A. \u201c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">At a certain point,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I c<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">a<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">me to realize that the best ideas flow not from the top down, but the other way around.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">I now believe that t<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">he more I can\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">question my own perspectives,\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">listen to people<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0and<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0let\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">them\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">do what they really believe in, the more success will follow.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Was Executive B successful?\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">Yes,<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0she was. She had won the hearts and loyalty of many people \u2013 those she supervised, but also her peers and the company\u2019s founder. Retention rates were high<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, expectations were exceeded<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, and people liked working in her unit because something new was always happening.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Was everything perfect? No. But as she summarized her situation, \u201cI\u2019m a work in progress, but I expect other people to be works in progress too. We\u2019re all in\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">this process\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">together. Let me stress that Ingaged Leadership is not an instant anything. It is a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">process that leads to a\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">new way to lead<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">but\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">it\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">is not always easy, and rarely fast. But it is highly worthwhile<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> even from day one<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">\u00a0because even small increases in a leader\u2019s level of I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">n<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">gagement yield outsized returns.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Key Activities of Ingaged Leaders<\/span><\/b><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Here are some key<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">\u00a0practices of\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">ngaged\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">L<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">eadership.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I would encourage you to start with one or two that you feel have the potential to yield the most improved results from your leadership. You can add more. You cannot use every idea or suggestion, but when people know they have been heard, they are more likely to become invested in their work. Share that feedback with everyone in your organization.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;134233279&quot;:true,&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Introduce new ways for people on all levels to share ideas on an equal basis,\u00a0<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">such as open meetings where ideas are captured, developed, and put into practice when possible.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li data-leveltext=\"\uf0b7\" data-font=\"Symbol\" data-listid=\"2\" data-aria-posinset=\"2\" data-aria-level=\"1\"><b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Invite everyone to contribute to<\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, define and refine your company\u2019s mission and vision.\u00a0<\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">I especially like to start meetings by asking people to state the company\u2019s vision, using their own words. One person with a negative attitude can literally cripple your company.
