{"id":3529,"date":"2017-08-01T10:22:17","date_gmt":"2017-08-01T14:22:17","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/c-suitenetworkadvisors.com\/?p=3529"},"modified":"2017-08-01T10:22:17","modified_gmt":"2017-08-01T14:22:17","slug":"fearless-feedback-white-flag","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csuiteold.c-suitenetwork.com\/advisors\/fearless-feedback-white-flag\/","title":{"rendered":"Fearless Feedback: The White Flag"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-3530 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/csuiteold.c-suitenetwork.com\/advisors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/TheWhiteFlag-1-600x800.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/csuiteold.c-suitenetwork.com\/advisors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/TheWhiteFlag-1-600x800.jpeg 600w, https:\/\/csuiteold.c-suitenetwork.com\/advisors\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2017\/08\/TheWhiteFlag-1.jpeg 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fearless Feedback: The White Flag<\/strong><strong>\u00ae<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In a previous blog I identified the three barriers preventing effective feedback namely confusion between feedback and criticism, the fear of making things worse, and not knowing how to deliver feedback to ensure it is positively accepted.<\/p>\n<p>What if there was a way to provide feedback clearly and safely so it is welcomed?\u00a0 What if there was a tool to eliminate the fear for both the giver and receiver?\u00a0 That tool is called the White Flag\u00ae.<\/p>\n<p>One of my very first clients was a very tall woman who often received complaints claiming she intimidated others. \u00a0She did not have a \u201cmean bone\u201d in her.\u00a0 She had an assertive manner which could often be misinterpreted by others (harsh and intimidating).<\/p>\n<p>Although I was able to share powerful techniques and she demonstrated a desire to change her communication she would sometimes fall back on bad habits.\u00a0 She would forget to make the changes and I couldn\u2019t always be there to remind her to use the new techniques.\u00a0 \u00a0\u00a0I needed to find her help in the moment.<\/p>\n<p>She had a few highly trusted and trusting employees who loved working with her.\u00a0 If I could somehow get them to help remind her when she fell back on bad habits perhaps it would help her make the changes we were all looking her to make.<\/p>\n<p>I was watching the movie the Patriot starring Mel Gibson.\u00a0 His men had been captured by the British and he was on his way to negotiate with General Charles Cornwallis to release them.\u00a0 He was carrying a large white flag.\u00a0 He was safe from attack.\u00a0 He had information Cornwallis wanted to hear.<\/p>\n<p>The white flag is an international sign of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Truce\">truce<\/a> or <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ceasefire\">ceasefire<\/a>, and request for negotiation. It is also often associated with <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Surrender_%28military%29\">surrender<\/a>, since it is often the weaker military party which requests negotiation. A white flag signifies to all that an approaching negotiator is unarmed, with intent to surrender or a desire to communicate.\u00a0 The American Red Cross has a similar symbol to protect neutral parties help the wounded in a war or a disaster.<\/p>\n<p>If I could get the trusted employees to use the White Flag\u00ae in the moment they could help her make the desired changes.\u00a0 She had good intentions.\u00a0 She wanted good performance in her department.\u00a0 She was not using the right methods and needed help to remember.<\/p>\n<p>The White Flag\u00ae tool is important to provide safety for both the giver and the receiver of feedback.\u00a0 The White Flag\u00ae is about learning and not about attacking.\u00a0 The White Flag\u00ae initiates a valuable discussion about process and method.\u00a0 It optimizes learning about method while minimizing or eliminating the possibility for criticism.<\/p>\n<p>My client was able to hear the feedback from her trusted employees exactly when she needed it.\u00a0 She was able to make the changes needed to her method of communication. She stopped being threatening and intimidating.<\/p>\n<p>How does the White Flag work?\u00a0 What is the technique?\u00a0 The next blog will clarify.
