Host Jeffrey Hayzlett talked to Smith about how the banking and financing industries have evolved in the last few years in order to accommodate the demands of their clients. Smith says that while everything is online now, it has enabled a faster process than traditional banking could ever deliver. Nowadays, customers don’t have to talk to a banker, but still want to feel like there’s a human being ready to address their needs.
OnDeck provides the traditional banking service with the non-traditional. For example, they provide traditional banking in the terms of their service offerings and maintain a relationship with their customers. That personalized touch strikes a chord with small business owners, who are the bulk of their clients. In order to keep those personal relationships, Smith says they conduct “extensive research” and one of the most common statements they hear from customers is “my numbers don’t match my story.” For Smith and her team, a person’s history matters as much, if not more, than the numbers reflected on their credit score.
Smith also told Hayzlet about the evolution of the banking industry. She states that in the past, people didn’t talk about having to borrow money; however, almost all small businesses need access to the capital market. The majority of their customers are mainstream businesses such as restaurant owners, auto repair shop owners, landscapers, contractors, etc. Smith adds, “there’s no element of shame anymore” because in order to be successful, businesses need capital. Another rising trend is that the big banks are also getting into the small business lending industry, as they’re also seeing the value this type of service can provide.
Smith had some words of wisdom for small business owners about seeking capital. She says, “Think about the investment you’re looking to fund. If you’re looking for a short-term investment, get a short-term payoff. Big projects should have a longer payoff.” She added, “Look what it is you need money for and figure out the appropriate ROI period.”
