Workplace Evolution: What Companies Are Doing to Maximize Their Work Space and Keep Employees Engaged

Executive Perspectives Live, one of the top online business shows on C-Suite TV, is launching a new episode featuring CEO and Co-Founder of Varidesk, Jason McCann talking about the year ahead in transformative and productive workspace and company culture.

Host Jeffrey Hayzlett talked to McCann about how he’s been able to create an office environment that has adapted, almost seamlessly, to the demands of business and how people work. Finding the perfect upright desk became a personal mission as McCann’s business partner experienced discomfort from having to sit down for long periods of time. As a result, they created a product that was easy to assemble and that provided a number of health benefits in the process.

McCann says that while standing while working isn’t exactly a new concept, he notes that over the past fifty years, professionals have fallen into the habit of comfort and sitting, but the body wasn’t made to sit still for long periods of time.

With the emergence of millennials as a dominant part of our labor force and collaborative spaces, the workplace has changed considerably in the last few decades. McCann set to make the office space concept “as flexible as possible because businesses are constantly changing.” He adds that “the world today is so transparent,” so why not rethink the workspace?

Changes in the workplace have had an effect on company culture, too. McCann states that culture is built on top of each company’s core values. Culture, he says, starts with top leadership and should live beyond a leader’s lifespan. Having a great culture allows employers to recruit and retain great talent, which lets employees to focus on the customer. This is manifested in employee engagement, as they show an emotional commitment by living and breathing the company’s values.

As a leader, McCann has learned to surround himself with people that share common values, elevate him and the company in order to scale the business. After all, people feed off of each other and that attitude becomes the culture that propels the business.
