Finding Clarity in Wanderlust
Consider/Ask: Radical Mindset Musings
· From an early age, Greg had to learn to adapt to new places and meeting new people. His many moves throughout his childhood demystified adaptation and encountering strangers.· He worked through the fear of the formative years through wanderlust, and being in a different place four years in a row. While he didn’t know at the time, he was acquiring soft skills that would benefit him later in life.· Travelling helps us discover the ways we are different from each other, but also spotlights the way we are all the same.· For creative individuals, it can be really depleting to be so invested in the corporate or business side of things. It can be a challenge to be good at something you don’t particularly enjoy. This makes it easy to miss the fact that you might not be on the right path.· It’s important to get back to what feeds you in an intrinsic and internal way, rather than a creature comfort way.· When you’re not doing the thing that you were put on earth to do, there is a discomfort there that you can’t always place. It ends up becoming an impediment to enjoying other things in life – relationships, extracurricular activities, etc.· Greg experienced some separation anxiety and depression that led him to experience a sense of panic. This, along with not being connected to what he was doing, fed off each other to affect both his personal and professional life.· Greg’s separation anxiety exacerbated the tumultuous nature of puberty in high school and also led to feelings of depression.· In Greg’s darkest times, he was tired, exhausted, and didn’t have much fight left in him. His pain manifested itself physically. There was no care of love for himself or living life.· Strength and resilience came from the mentality that you don’t walk off the field until the game is over.· To overcome, there has to be a persistence to just do the work. Sometimes that means getting out of bed and going to work, or meeting with a therapist. There is always something to find that’s beautiful or life affirming or sustaining. You have to have your eyes open enough to see them when they come by.· It can take a while to realize the nature of our creativity. Creativity is all about telling stores; the medium is secondary.
Revolutionary Leader’s Mantra: Greg’s mantra comes from a poem he’s always cherished: You are a child of the universe and you have a right to be here. Whether or not it’s clear to you, the universe is unfolding as it should. We’re a tiny speck in a big universe.
He travels with a copy of this poem everywhere he goes.
