The McCuistion Program is an issues-oriented television program that illuminates business, social, economic and public policy concerns and challenges. Each program focuses on a current/ timely topic of importance, in a talk show format with expert guests and develops the various concepts or issues of that particular topic , in objectively, fairly and evenly presented discussion. Viewers are invited to make their opinions known and to actively get involved in making a difference; whether by active participation in civic and charitable activities or letting their city, state and national elected officials know how they (the viewers) feel.

Joining host Dennis McCuistion are Meredith Norris, Generation Citizen Central Texas Site Director, Margo McClinton Stoglin, PhD, IGNITE Texas State Director, Dodie Kaspar Coordinator of Law Related Education and Michelle Baum, PhD, Clotilda Winter Endowed Professor in Education, Texas Christian University.

To be a “good” citizen, being informed on civic education is important. Yet many American citizens know little about how government works, how their elected officials make decisions and how all of this affects their own lives as citizens.

What can be done to remedy this? Our experts believe starting with educating our students at an early age and continuing to do so on civics is important. While voting maybe many years away young people can impact officials and policies and make a difference.

Texas Christian University for instance conducts a summer institute camp on action civics that gets young students involved in hands on learning and then taking action so they can impact the future direction of government and their community. Inquiry based, each small group decides what to focus on, looks at root causes and they then formulate plans to address the issue they’ve chosen. They get involved in simulations. And create public service announcements.

Students also need to hear from elected officials and community leaders. A focus can also be to help teachers better understood our founding documents, our constitutions and policies.

Training young students to be future leaders is a consideration.

The key is education of both teachers and students and getting students involved in policy discussions and how they can impact their society.
